Ru(III) and Rh(I) complexes of some biologically active azomethines wi
th NX (X = S or O) donor system have been described. The products of t
ype Ru(NX)(3) and (PPh(3))(2)Rh(NX) were obtained by 1:3 and 1:1 molar
reactions of RuCl3.3H(2)O and (PPh(3))(3)RhCl with monofunctional bid
entate azomethines and have been characterised by elemental analyses,
molecular weight determinations, conductance measurements, X-ray. powd
er diffraction and spectroscopic techniques such as electronic, IR, H-
1 NMR, C-13 NMR and P-31 NMR. From the analysis of above studies the d
onor sites of ligand have been located and geometries of the donor env
ironment around the Ru(III)/Rh(I) acceptor centre proposed. The ligand
s and their metal complexes have been tested on a number of pathogenic
fungi and bacteria in order to assess their growth inhibiting potency
at different concentrations.
