Abstract
This review of epidemiologic, clinical, and psychosocial/psychobehavio ral data related to genital herpes simplex virus infection details the increasing incidence of herpes simplex virus infection in the United States and summarizes the data regarding the safety and efficacy of ch ronic and acute antiviral therapy with acyclovir. It additionally esta blishes the validity of psychosocial intervention as an adjunct to pha rmacologic therapy for patients with recurrent genital herpes.
