Abstract
A freshwater filamentous cyanobacterium, Nostoc spongiaeforme TISTR 81 69, produced and excreted a violet pigment, named nostocine A, in the culture medium. Nostocine A inhibited the growth of some typical strai ns of microorganisms, algae, cultured plants, and established animal c ell lines.
