The determination of low levels of lactulose in milk was performed aft
er selective precipitation of lactose. The effect of the ethanol on th
e precipitation of disaccharides was studied. Treatment with ethanol o
f milk samples containing low levels of lactulose caused the selective
partial removal of lactose without crystallization of lactulose. This
procedure is suitable for the gas chromatographic determination of la
ctulose in pasteurized and powder milks providing precise and reproduc
ible results.
