Dw. Yuan et Rg. Brown, THE EFFECT OF PH ON THE ABSORPTION AND FLUORESCENCE PROPERTIES OF SOME 4-AMINO-N-ALKYLAMINO-1,8- NAPHTHALIMIDES, Journal of chemical research. Synopses, (11), 1994, pp. 418-419
A series of substituted naphthalimides have been prepared for evaluati
on as pH sensors acting via a photoinduced electron transfer (PET) mec
hanism: the compounds were found to be pH sensitive but only at the ex
tremes of pH, the mechanism causing this sensitivity being due to prot
ons or hydroxide ions quenching the fluorescent state rather than PET.
