Faced with the challenge of violence, Algerian women must devise a def
ense strategy. While their earlier struggles enabled them to build a m
ovement centered on the achievement of full citizenship, a divergence
grew out of differing views on how to confront the Islamist threat. Fo
r some, the expression of Islamism on the political stage must be prev
ented by all means; for others the independence of the women's movemen
t has to be protected against the danger of cooptation (by the State)
under the guise of fighting fundamentalism.
