Enginia, a new genus of muroid rodents, is defined on the basis of Eng
inia gertcheki n.sp. from the locality Kesekoy (MN 3, N.W. Anatolia).
The species E. djanpolati n.sp. from Kesekoy and E. beckerplateni n.sp
. from Kilcak 3a (?MN 2, C.Anatolia) are both assigned to the genus En
ginia. We tentatively allocate Enginia to the Cricetopsinae on the bas
is of similarity of the dental patterns and the shape of the cross-sec
tions of the incisors, although the structure of the enamel of the low
er incisor is more specialized in Enginia than it is in Cricetops. The
teeth of the genus Enginia show features that suggest a fossorial mod
e of life.
