In modified fasting (modified zero diet) oral energy supply is nearly
completely stopped. Three liters of liquid consumed daily contain 350
kcal, proteins and carbohydrates (in one litre of protein enriched whe
y). 10 adipose persons on a 4-6 weeks fasting diet reduced their avera
ge body mass index from 34.5 to 30.7; average weight loss over 28 days
was 6.9, over 42 days 14.4 kg. Three months after the fasting period
50% of the patients had kept their weight constant or lost more weight
; 20% showed slightly increased weight. Fasting was accompanied by nut
ritional counselling and medical-psychological care.
