The heterogeneous oxidation of methane-air mixtures in a stagnation po
int flow onto a platinum foil is investigated numerically and results
are compared with experiments. The analysis includes a detailed reacti
on mechanism in the gas phase as well as on the surface. The heterogen
eous ignition occurring around 600 degrees C, extinction, and autother
mal behaviour are interpreted in terms of elementary steps at the gas-
surface interface.
