A decreased oxygen content in Y-123 has the same effect as Me(3+) (Me
= Al, Co, Fe) doping at the Cu1 chain site. This results in a depressi
on of T-c and based on the observed structural changes it can be ratio
nalised in terms of a decreased carrier concentration in the CuO2 plan
es. In ''underdoped'' materials the superconducting properties can be
improved by partial replacement of yttrium by calcium, a finding made
in oxygen depleted as well as cobalt doped materials.
