The only known and established application for hard metal coatings in
the plastics processing sector have increasingly been the cavities of
injection moulds. For uses in plasticizing units, tribological studies
into the interaction between the moulding material and the coated opp
osite surface have so far been lacking. This necessarily mises the que
stion about the extent to which PVD type hard metal coatings in plasti
cizing units exert an influence on the friction in the solids zone, th
e wall sliding behaviour in the melt area and the resistance of the me
lt between the screw flight and the cylinder wall.
