Direct enantiomeric separations of racemic mixtures of (R,S)-1-(dialky
lamino)-2-alkanols were achieved with a variety of alcohol-modified pe
ntane mobile phases and a Chiralpak AD chiral stationary phase. The ef
fects of the aliphatic component and the alcohol modifier in the mobil
e phase were studied independently. The best separations were obtained
with pentane based mobile phases. A variety of alcohol modifiers were
investigated that introduced steric factors or affected hydrogen bond
ing. Ring size and hetero atom effects of the substituents were noted.
Some differences in enantioselectivity between columns were observed.
