Dw. Armstrong et al., GAS-SOLID CHROMATOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS OF AUTOMOBILE TAILPIPE EMISSIONS AS A FUNCTION OF DIFFERENT ENGINE AND EXHAUST SYSTEM MODIFICATIONS, Journal of chromatography, 688(1-2), 1994, pp. 201-209
A single, relatively short gas-solid porous-layer open-tubular chromat
ographic column was used to separate aliphatic hydrocarbons, aromatic
hydrocarbons and some inorganic gases (O-2, CO and CO2) found in autom
obile exhaust. The column's performance and longevity did not appear t
o be affected by the presence of water or carbon dioxide in the sample
s. The concentrations of the emission gases varied considerably with c
hanges in air/fuel ratio, coil voltage and use of catalytic converters
. The results of the analyses were compared with those obtained using
a commercial emission analyser (''sniffer'').
