Weak base enantiomers were separated by capillary electrophoresis usin
g hydroxypropyl p-cyclodextrin-containing background electrolytes. The
multiple equilibria-based electrophoretic separation selectivity mode
l (DID model) of enantiomers was used to analyze the results and deter
mine the model parameters. The extended peak resolution equation of ca
pillary electrophoresis has been applied to calculate the peak resolut
ion surfaces as a function of the pH and the hydroxypropyl beta-cyclod
extrin concentration of the background electrolyte, the dimensionless
electroosmotic flow coefficient, and the effective portion of the appl
ied potential. Combination of the DID selectivity model and the extend
ed peak resolution equation allows the rational optimization of the op
erating conditions and the realization of separations previously deeme
d impossible.
