We present a theoretical study of the localization of atoms with an an
gular momentum J(g)=3 to J(e)=4 transition (e.g., chromium atoms) in q
uantized optical molasses created by two counterpropagating linearly p
olarized laser beams. We study the localization as a function of the p
otential depth, the angle between the polarizations and the interactio
n time with the molasses in the low-intensity limit, and discuss the p
ossibility of adiabatic compression and squeezing of the atomic distri
bution.
