Synchrotron-excited photoemission is used to explore the evolution in
the electronic structure of the BaPb1-xBixO3 system as a function of x
, using cleaved single crystal and scraped ceramic samples. At the met
al-to-non-metal transition point, a sharp change in surface reactivity
is revealed, with metallic samples being more unstable to atmospheric
degradation than semiconducting samples. ARPES data shows enhancement
s in spectral intensity at the Fermi energy away from the Gamma-point;
these are compared with band-structure calculations.
