In surface finishing operations in the carpentry industry, lacquered o
r painted workpieces are sanded either manually or with vibrating sand
ers, belt sanders of fladders when process automation is not technical
ly possible or economically feasible. Sanding dust can cause health ha
zards [1], quality problems, and a danger of fire in the workplace. Th
e effect of various local exhaust systems, which can be combined with
hand sanding machines, on the airborne dust emission rate has been stu
died at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.
