Cefotaxime sodium (CAS 64485-93-4) is a semisynthetic cephalosporin de
rivative belonging to the third-generation cephalosporins. Owing to it
s broad antibacterial activity and its high resistance to beta-lactama
ses it can be used for a large variety of infections. In the present s
tudy the quality standard of 15 different cefotaxime sodium manufactur
ers from 9 different countries has been examined. The best results wer
e received for the preparation Claforan(R). None of the 14 other produ
cts showed comparable results especially with respect to particulate m
atter and by-products. The particulate contamination of the 14 foreign
products showed relatively high values although they still comply wit
h the limits set by the pharmacopoeias. In contrast, in Claforan very
few particles were found in the solution.
