The reactions of re:coil Cl-38 atoms produced through the Cl-37(n, gam
ma)Cl-38 process in the CF3Cl-C2H4 gas phase are described in this wor
k, The CF3Cl is a chlorine source as well as moderator. Scavengers, su
ch as O-2 and H2S, were added to the system to discriminate the reacti
ons induced by energetic and/or thermal chlorine atoms. The radioactiv
e Cl-38-labeled products were separated using gas-chromatographic tech
nique followed by an external proportional counter for quantitative de
termination of the product yields. The mechanisms of the chemical reac
tions are predicted to account for the formation of these organic comp
ounds.
