Abstract
For the chemisorption model of Lang and Williams, the adsorbate-induce d electron density changes in linear and nonlinear order of the field were calculated recently. Based on these calculations the relation bet ween the electronic structure of simple atom/metal systems and the pro cess of SHG from surfaces is discussed in terms of relevant factors su ch as electronegativity, nonlinear atomic polarizability, work-functio n change, and metal response.
