Nine lithostratigraphic units have been distinguished in the Korba 1 w
ell (KO 1) which was drilled on the eastern coast of the Cap-Bon penin
sula within the series belonging to the Oligocene and Neogene interval
. The former Fortuna Sandstones Formation (BUROLLET, 1956) is elevated
here at a group level and subdivided into two formations: the Korbous
Formation, overlain by the El Haouaria Sandstones. Thanks to the plan
ctonic Foraminifera present and identified in some layers of the analy
sed interval (Plaisancian to Rupelian), nine biozones have been recogn
ized, allowing a rather good stratigraphic frame and reliable correlat
ions on a world-wide scale.
