Human leukocyte cathepsin G stimulates the hydrolysis of bovine neck l
igament elastin by leukocyte elastase. The stimulation factor (1.0-2.0
) depends on the enzyme concentration ratio and ionic strength. Soybea
n Bowman-Birk-type inhibitor effectively inhibits the hydrolysis of el
astin by elastase, cathepsin G, or a mixture of both enzymes. The effi
ciency of inhibition was virtually independent of ionic strength, the
ratio between the enzyme concentrations, their preadsorption on elasti
n, or the stage of hydrolysis of elastin.
