S-Methylbenzylsulfonium S-alkylides, prepared by fluoride ion-induced desilylation of S-methyl-S-[1 -(trimethylsilyl)alkyl](2,4-disubstitute d benzyl)sulfonium salts 8 in dimethyl sulfoxide, rearranged exclusive ly to Sommelet-Hauser products without contamination of Stevens produc ts.
