We consider a three-dimensional nonlinearly hyperelastic shell and we
let its thickness go to zero. We show, under appropriate hypotheses on
the applied loads, that the deformations that minimize the total ener
gy weakly converge in a Sobolev space toward deformations that minimiz
e a nonlinear membrane shell energy. The nonlinear membrane shell ener
gy is obtained by computing the Gamma-limit of the three-dimensional e
nergies.
