Abstract
Duodenal contractile movement in the fasting state and changes in the plasma levels of motilin, somatostatin, and cholecystokinin were inves tigated in 15 postgastrectomy patients. The relationships between thos e parameters and postoperative appetite, as well as the effects of ora l administration of cisapride 7.5 mg, were also studied. Even after va gotomy, migrating motor complexes (MMCs) were generated from the duode num. Motilin and somatostatin must act together for MMCs to be generat ed. Generation of MMCs is essential for postoperative appetite. Cisapr ide caused generation of MMCs on a short cycle and appearance of this phase of gastrointestinal motility in many previously negative patient s.
