Ma. Masini et al., A LOCAL RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN-LIKE SYSTEM IN THE HEART OF AN AFRICAN LUNGFISH (PROTOPTERUS ANNECTENS), Comparative biochemistry and physiology. Part A, Physiology, 110(3), 1995, pp. 229-233
The presence of components of a renin-angiotensin system was investiga
ted in the heart of an African lungfish Protopterus annectens. A renin
-like activity is present in heart homogenates. The activity reaches i
ts maximum after 90 min of incubation at 20 degrees C. By a spectropho
tometric assay, an angiotensin converting enzyme-like activity was det
ected. By immunohistochemistry Ile(5)-Angiotensin II immunoreactive ca
rdiocytes were demonstrated in the atrium and bulbus. Our data indicat
e that probably a local renin-angiotensin-like system is present in th
e heart of Protopterus annectens.
