The hydrogenolysis of 2-(benzo[b]thiopen-2-yl)propan-2-ol with triethy
lsilane and trifluoroacetic acid not only afforded the expected 2-isop
ropylbenzo[b]thiophene (1) but also a dimeric benzo[b]thiophene deriva
tive (4) as a racemic mixture, the structure of which was confirmed by
X-ray analysis.
