Abstract
A convenient synthesis of 2-benzylindoles 8a-c from 2-nitrobenzaldehyd es 4a-c, involving a Wittig reaction with ethyl benzyl(triphenyl-lambd a5-phosphanylidene)acetate 5, cyclization of the product esters 6a-c b y reaction with triethyl phosphite and removal of the ester group usin g alcoholic KOH, is reported.
