The carbon K-edge EELFS, AES and LEED are measured for the carbidic an
d the graphitic carbons on Ni(111) and Ni(100) surfaces. The nearest n
eighbor C-C distance 1.44 Angstrom obtained from EXELFS for graphitic
carbon on Ni(111) is in good agreement with that for crystalline graph
ite. We newly find the hybrid surface of the carbidic and graphitic ca
rbon overlayers on Ni(111) surface. The carbidic carbon on Ni(111) sho
ws ELNES spectrum similar to that on Ni(100) surface.
