X-ray K-absorption edges along with their near-edge structures have be
en recorded using a Cauchois type bent crystal spectrograph of 0.4 m r
adius in the transmission mode for the three intermetallic compounds v
iz., Nd2Co17, NdCo5 and NdCo3. Chemical shifts have been estimated and
correlated with earlier magnetic studies. The negative values of the
chemical shifts for the K-edge of cobalt have been attributed to the f
act that in these compounds cobalt atom behaves as an anion.
