Abstract
La3+ and Lu3+ ions are intercalated within the interlamellar space of montmorillonite as aquocomplexes. Heating at 700 degrees C for 6 h ind uces a structural change around the lanthanide ions resulting in the f ormation of oxide-type environments. The change is complete only for t he lutetium sample, which is consistent with the lower value of the de hydration enthalpy of this cation.
