Abstract
The properties and role of leghemoglobin, the oxygen-carrying hemoprot ein of legume nodules and an indispensable component of the symbiotic nitrogen-fixing system leguminous plant-rhizobial microsymbiont, are r eviewed. It is concluded that leghemoglobin not only supplies oxygen t o bacteroids, but also is a part of system regulating oxygen concentra tion in the infected nodule cells.
