P. Lezcano et al., A NOTE ON THE USE OF HUMID SACCHARINA IN PIGS FROM 62 TO 103 DAYS OF AGE, Cuban journal of agricultural science, 27(3), 1993, pp. 309-311
One hundred sixty eight hybrid pigs from the Hampshire x Yorkshire-Dur
oc rotational cross of 105 kg liveweight were distributed into 3 treat
ments and 7 replications of 8 eight animals each for studying the incl
usion of humid Saccharina as a par tial substitute of the ration. A co
mpletely randomized design was used and the treatments were: a control
ration and two inclusion levels of humid Saccharina (367 and 417 g/an
imal/day). There were no significant differences between treatments fo
r final weight (kg), daily gain (g) and total conversion (kg feed/kg i
ncrease). Feed conversion without Saccharina was significantly better
(P < 0.05) in the treatment with the lowest Saccharina inclusion. Valu
es were: 3.07, 2.81 and 2.99, respectively. The feasibility of substit
uting the feed by humid Saccharina with the lowest level (367 g) which
represents 24.6% of the diet in a humid basis, is considered.
