The basic methodology of two major affinity immunoelectrophoresis tech
niques, i.e., crossed affinity immunoelectrophoresis and lectin affini
ty electrophoresis with immunoblotting, is described. This review cove
rs the use of these procedures in the study of the mechanisms regulati
ng protein glycosylation of several serum proteins from humans and ani
mals. Applications of these techniques in fields of biochemical and cl
inical interest, such as inflammation, cancer, pregnancy and foetal de
velopment, are discussed.
