Agarose gel electrophoresis has been extensively employed by researche
rs to gain a greater understanding of lipoprotein biology and its rela
tionship to cardiovascular disease. Advances in this technique have be
en made in the visualization and quantitation of separated lipoprotein
s, in the use of agarose gel electrophoresis for detection and quantit
ation of apolipoproteins of the separated lipoproteins, and in the det
ection of lipoprotein heterogeneity. Agarose gel electrophoresis has b
een employed for two-dimensional electrophoretic analysis of lipoprote
ins as well as in several different methods which probe the immunologi
cal properties of lipoproteins. Agarose gel electrophoresis has thus b
ecome an important tool in the study of serum lipoproteins in both cli
nical and basic science laboratories.
