Abstract
Regioselective benzylation of thiophene and benzothiophene using benzy l chloride and a ZnCl2-promoted montmorillonite catalyst is described. An improved process for the cyclization of (arylthio)acetaldehyde dia lkyl acetals to benzothiophenes using the same catalyst is also docume nted.
