The reaction of cryptophane-O (1) with lithium diphenylphosphide affor
ds the hexaphenol (2), which on alkylation with methyl bromoacetate fo
llowed by hydrolysis of the intermediate hexaester (3) provides the he
xa-acidic cryptophane (4). The latter is soluble in D2O-NaOD at pD app
roximate to 7, where it strongly binds the tetramethyl derivatives of
silicium, germanium, tin and lead, and the tetraethyl derivatives of s
ilicium, germanium and tin.
