A. Shah et al., A TERATOCARCINOMA DEVELOPING AFTER GROSS TOTAL EXCISION OF A PINEAL TERATOMA IN A PATIENT WITH SYSTEMIC LUPUS-ERYTHEMATOSUS, Neurological research, 17(3), 1995, pp. 229-232
This is a rare case of a teratocarcinoma developing at the same site o
ne year after the gross total excision of a mature pineal teratoma. Th
e malignant tumour arose probably from microscopic remnants of the ter
atoma. This patient also suffered from systemic lupus erythematosus. A
utoimmune diseases have been associated with an increased risk of mali
gnancy, and in this case may have contributed to the malignant transfo
rmation of the teratoma.
