Abstract
The aim of this Note is to present a formulation of the Stokes system in terms of the variables velocity and vorticity, in a bounded three-d imensional domain, leading to the solution of symmetric problems only. This is basically achieved by the setting of a two-component vector b oundary problem in order to determine the solenoidal harmonic componen t of the vorticity. The treatment of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations by means of this approach is straightforward.
