The electrosynthesis of Fe-H, Fe-Si and Fe-Sn has been achieved in the
perspective of replacing mercury amalgams and alkali metals by electr
icity for ecological purposes. A consumable Mg anode, a stainless stee
l grid cathode, THF solvent and n-Bu(4)NBr electrolyte are used. The e
lectroreduction of [Fe(eta(5)-C(5)R(5))(CO)(2)](2) (R = H or CH3) lead
s to [Fe(eta(5)-C(5)R(5))(CO)(2)(H)] and, in the presence of ECl (E =
SiMe(3) or SnBu(3)), [Fe(eta(5)-C5H5(dppe)(H)] is produced from [Fe(et
a(5)-C5H5)(eta(6)-C6H5CH3)](PF6-)-P-+ and dppe.
