Over the past several years, capillary gas chromatography (GC) with Fo
urier transform infrared (FT-IR) and/or mass spectral (MS) detection h
as become the primary analytical tool for qualitative and quantitative
analysis of complex mixtures. Because of the wide range of applicatio
ns, the analytical requirements have motivated several recent chromato
graphic and detection developments. This review examines those, illust
rating with applications that demonstrate the power of GC and multidim
ensional GC-MS, GC-FT-IR and GC-FT-IR-MS systems for solving a wide va
riety of analytical problems. Additionally, the article discusses the
integrated performance of such analytical systems with the aid of rece
nt sample introduction and computer data analysis technique advances.
