As. Ba, PAST, PRESENT AND PROSPECTS FOR TRADITION AL VETERINARY-MEDICINE IN AFRICA, Revue scientifique et technique - Office international des epizooties, 15(3), 1996, pp. 813-826
The author outlines the history of traditional veterinary medicine in
Africa, the origin and evolution of which depend on empirical findings
. Contributions of traditional medicine to the health and production o
f animals are illustrated by examples. This is followed by an account
of the present status of traditional veterinary medicine in Africa, th
e ways in which it can coexist with modern medicine, its achievements
and limitations. Finally the author examines the prospects for traditi
onal veterinary medicine, with reference to conditions and constraints
governing its development. He concludes by suggesting that certain st
eps be taken to re-evaluate and promote traditional veterinary medicin
e, particularly a reconsideration of the role of traditional practitio
ners by Veterinary Services, and conservation of medicinal plants.
