Abstract
It is demonstrated that for experiments in a 100 T held the most suita ble wave form is a half-sine wave, and that monolithic 100 T coils wit h optimized current distribution or internal reinforcement require a p ulse generator with very high power and high voltage. This can be circ umvented by using a system of two concentric coils, consisting of a sm all high strength coil (Coilin) inside a large conventional coil (Coil ex). A set of analytical formulae is developed which gives a comprehen sive view on the characteristics of Collins immersed in a Coiler field B-0(.). The optimal shape of Coiler is determined as well.
