Based on the existing technology of magnets with internal reinforcemen
t, several designs are discussed to illustrate different routes for ob
taining 100 T. The theoretical basis for the behaviour of these magnet
s is presented, and two designs are worked out in detail: one using gl
ass fibre and soft copper, the other using a strong conductor and stif
f reinforcement. These monolithic magnets are capable of generating lo
ng pulses and because they require a high power, they are well suited
to be driven by a capacitor bank.
