The radiative recombination time tau of excitons in GaAs/AlGaAs quantu
m wells shows an anomalous increase at the v = 1/3 incompressible quan
tum liquid (IQL). This order of magnitude increase in tau indicates th
at at v = 1/3 the electron density near the valence band hole is reduc
ed. The electron density spreads out as a consequence of the incompres
sibility of the IQL.
