The activity coefficients of some volatile organic compounds in differ
ent absorption media were determined by head space gaschromatography a
t two temperatures. The experimental results show that within the erro
r of limit the respective activity coefficient obtained at mole fracti
on x = 0,005 of VOC in the liquid phase is found to be equal to the ac
tivity coefficient at infinite dilution. It can be concluded that the
molecular structure of a washing liquid is responsible for its absorpt
ion behaviour. The excess free energy of mixing fractions of absorptio
n medium and volatile organic compound was found as an alternative cri
terion for the selection of washing liquids. The data are in coinciden
ce to activity coefficients resulting from thermodynamic investigation
s.
