Abstract
The electrooptical characteristics of multidomain twisted nematic liqu
id crystal displays (TN-L CDs), such as optical properties, contrast r
atio contours, and gray-scale performance, have been investigated by a
computer simulation, where the number of domains of each pixel is cho
sen as 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, and 120 with the aim of determining the
optimum number of domains. It is shown that the TN LCD with quartered
pixels exhibits the best results in terms of the viewing angle and gr
ay-scale performance, and furthermore, that more than eight domains gi
ves the same result as for the amorphous TN-LCD that has several thous
and domains in each pixel.
