Abstract
We start with a discussion of the paraxial Maxwell equations in nonchi ral and chiral media. These equations have a particular class of solut ions that generate the electromagnetic Gaussian beams. We discuss thei r relationship with the scalar Gaussian beams as well as their behavio ur during propagation.
