Ew. Rice et al., DETECTION OF ESCHERICHIA-COLI IN WATER USING A COLORIMETRIC GENE PROBE ASSAY, Journal of environmental science and health. Part A: Environmental science and engineering, 30(5), 1995, pp. 1059-1067
A commercially available DNA hydribization assay (Gene-trak(R), Framin
gham, MA, USA) was compared with the EC-MUG procedure for the detectio
n of Escherichia coil in water. The gene probe gave positive responses
for pure cultures of E. coli, E. coli 0157:H7, E. fergusonii, Shigell
a sonnei, S. dysenteriae and S. boydii. The hybridization assay was ca
pable of detecting E. coil in environmental samples and survivors amon
g chlorine exposed cells.
