Meteor-radar observation of neutral winds in the lower thermosphere ne
ar Sheffield (52.5(0)N, 2.0(0)W) have been used to investigate the sho
rt-term variability of the amplitude of the semidiurnal tide. Consider
able variability is found on time scales of about 2-15 days, similar t
o the periods associated with planetary waves. Modulation of the tidal
amplitudes with a period near two days is demonstrated for two episod
es in 1992. In both of these cases there is coincident planetary-wave
activity of similar period suggesting a non-linear wave-wave interacti
on is responsible.
